Excellent fully compliant workplace with an emphasis on Health and Safety and good working practices, like paying Award and Penalty rates. Training is provided for specific ares, and thy have a weekly all-staff Health and Safety meeting.

Cotton season starts around late April and finishes August/September depending on harvest and weather conditions. (Applying for the job needs to be done around January/February, through Agri Labour contractors.

You will work long hours but the work is fairly straightforward to get to grips with.

Enjoyable, safe place to work

5/ 5

I enjoyed working for Southern Cotton. They look out for every single one of their employees and safety is high on their agenda. Wages are very good, you will make between 900 and 1400$ a week. Cotton season starts around late April and finishes between August/September depending on harvest and weather conditions. (Applying for the job needs to be done around January/February) They sign off 2nd year visas but a lot of backpackers will come back in their second year to work for them again as the pay and conditions are that good. 2 down sides: the company is located in rural NSW so you will have not much of a social life, second, they hire a recruitment agency “Agri Labour” who do the employment payments. They take 300$ out of your wage for medicals and 80$ for PPE in the start of the season. They prefer to employ backpackers coming from certain countries over other countries which I find wrong and discriminating. I recommend everyone to work for Southern cotton. Its a great experience and a good way to save up money for a big holiday after.

Good company

5/ 5

Southern Cotton is a good company to work for. You work 12h shifts but the work is not too demanding so everyone with a normal fitness could do the job. You make good money and the company looks after its employees. Safety is high on the agenda and they provide free wifi. The cotton season goes on for about 4 or 5 months so enough time to let all your 88 days signed in one go. Season is between April and August/September.

The Cotton gin doesn’t asks you to stay in a specific accommodation. The pub – Whitton Rice Bowl Hotel Pub – is one of the closest and most affordable accommodation. Owners are nice. Everything is available: kitchen, bathrooms, pool table, washing room, garden. Although everything is there, its a bit run down and some beds are comfortable but others are not so much.
